– Overcoming Obstacles
Every plan of any significance will run into obstacles. If your goals require
major changes, the changes themselves will create some new challenges. These
things just come with the territory, so let's discuss how to deal with them.
An obstacle is something unexpected that blocks or slows down your path to a
goal. This could be a change in the law, political unrest, running out of
capital or a myriad of other possibilities.
Several years ago I had a new home built on a piece of property I own. The
county where I live is well known for burying projects in red tape. Being a
seasoned manager I planned and cross-checked every detail. My goal was for my
job never to be shutdown during construction. But sure enough I arrived at the
construction site one day, and my job was red tagged. On my drawing was a
power pole at the street with a trench running to the power pole at the house
site. Voltages and cable sizes were clearly marked along the trench. However,
there was no line drawn in the trench connecting the two poles. I drew in
the line and handed it back to the inspector. He shut the job down for another
four days while the county reviewed the added line. Crazy? Yes.
Reality? Yes.
The best attitude is to expect the unexpected and take everything in stride. For
almost all problems there is a solution if enough creativity, labor and/or money
is thrown at it. Your goals will undoubtedly require personal changes,
environment changes or both. Any type of change makes people nervous and
often they push back. I recall watching a documentary where a 45 year old
man learned how to read. Somehow he had faked his way for many years through the
work force and no one had ever caught on that he was illiterate. A friend
finally taught him how to read. This wonderful accomplishment created
angst among his close family members. They had always felt useful helping him
fill in forms and briefing him on the daily news so he could fake reading the
newspaper at work. The dynamics of the relationships were forced to change.
If you are trying to force change in an organization, multiply your anticipated
effort by 10. I am talking about accomplishing real change where you have
solid-buy in. This is opposed to what I call the company nod. A corporate
mandate is issued. Everyone nods their head in agreement and then continues
doing the things the old way or they work on sabotaging the new methodologies.
