Greetings,

My name is Randy Ross and I will be your facilitator for this class. This course will fast track you to unstoppable success.  It is based on years of research and real life experiences with my MBA students. Before you spend lots of money for success courses, self-help gurus, life coaches and or career coaches, let me fill you in on the #1 critical factor for success.  In my view, that factor is ATTITUDE spelled in capital letters   Without a positive attitude you are not going very far in life. I can give you tools for success, progress matrices, spreadsheets, and check-off lists, but if you approach life with a chip on your shoulder, you will have wasted your time.  Throughout this course we will be working on the underlying factors that drive a great attitude. These are good self esteem, strong self confidence and a clear vision of where you are going and a rock-solid action plan.  Resolve now to have the best attitude in your workplace, church, family or community group

Here are several real life examples of how the attitude of one person can be extremely powerful. Several years ago I was in the San Francisco Airport making a connection on a day that all professional travelers dread. It was the day of the perfect storm, when San Francisco, Chicago and New York were virtually shut down for weather delays.  The ticket counter area in the main concourse looked like a three ring circus. I quickly set out to escape from this insanity into the quiet of United’s Red Carpet Lounge. Upon opening the door it was quickly apparent that this venue also was in near pandemonium. All flights were severely delayed and a growing number of flights were being cancelled. I stood in line with many others to rebook my ticket. At the front of the line a very rude gentlemen was yelling at the poor booking agent. I am sure that you have met his kind, the person that is more important than everyone else. I patiently stood in line and watched the spectacle. In the middle of this customer’s tirade, the agent stepped slightly to the side, made direct eye contact with me and said in a warm and friendly voice, “I see that you have entered my line and I will be with you as quickly as possible.”  I have to say I was very impressed with both her attitude and composure. I did still have to wait like everyone else, but her kindness helped make the flight delays a lot more tolerable.

Let me share a quote with you written by Marion Stroud.

"You are someone special
Whether your ambition is to turn the world
Upside down, or stay safely hidden
In the back row of life
Statistics show that you being "you"
Will have a noticeable effect on the lives
Of at least 162 other people
Your life will leave its mark.
In that you have no choice.
But you can begin to choose - now -
What kind of mark it will be.
For the choices you make today
will shape that future "you." …..

Now I have no idea how the number of 162 people was arrived at. In fact I would suggest that number has a few zeros after it. But, Marion’s remarks are right on the money.

Let me share another example with you. Recently I boarded a shuttle bus at the Sacramento Airport that goes from the parking lot to the terminal.  I stepped on the bus and an impeccably dressed driver greeted me with a warm hello, a sincere smile and repeated to me twice the parking lot row number where he had picked me up, so that I can easily return to the correct spot.  We entered into a pleasant conversation for the remainder of the ride. This was a dramatic and welcome change in attitude for me. Often these drivers are sullen, have terrible attitudes and make the least possible effort.  Now I am sure that this driver I am describing could find lots of reasons to also be sullen if he wanted to. I imagine he takes a lot of abuse every day from weary travelers. In the giant airport org chart, his name is probably at the bottom of the list.  But instead, this driver did what I call signing your work with a beautiful pen. In other words, whatever your work product is, you should be willingly to sign your name on it with pride.

Be Willingly to Place Your Signature on Anything You Create

Now you may ask, so what? What is the big deal about a positive attitude? Who cares? Those passengers will never see that driver again.  Yes, you may be right about the last part. However, I concur with the theory that has been proposed by many about the forces of  energy. That is that positive energy begets positive energy and negative energy begets negative energy.

So let’s take a look at negative energy.  Later that same day I passed through the security screening in the Seattle airport. A TSA agent was sitting in a chair loudly blabbing in an endless tirade about how terrible her working conditions were and who had done her wrong.  I can only best describe her as a poisonous cloud of negative energy.  If you stayed near that cloud for very long, it is sure to contaminate you. Now don’t get me wrong, certainly lots of TSA agents have great attitudes.  However, this one woman, probably infected thousands of people before the end of the day with her vile attitude and certainly created an unpleasant environment for her colleagues.

Let me make a few comments on this course. My only expectation at the beginning of this course is that you know how to spell the words "success and goals." At the end of this course, I expect that you will be taking the world by storm and executing your powerful, unstoppable, awesome, new personal competitive advantage we are going to build together. The purpose of this course is to empower you with the ability to go achieve your dreams and make the changes necessary in your life to get there.  I will be pushing you out of your comfort zone to make these changes in your life. Why? If you do not make any change, including a positive attitude, then I can just about guarantee that you will not achieve any of your goals. If you believe you have a greater potential than you have reached today, and believe that there is more to life than is currently available to you, then please continue on in this course to Lesson 2. I will close this session with some infamous and inspiring words from Nelson Mandela.

"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn't serve the world.

There's nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. You are born to make manifest the glory of God that is within you. It's not just in some of us, it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we're liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”
