Lesson
#7
– Create a Positive Attitude
This lesson will
take an in-depth look at how to create and keep a positive attitude. It is of
course easy to have a very positive attitude when everything is going your way.
It is quite another thing to stay centered and hold that attitude in the face of
bad situations and dealing with incompetence.
To
respond to anger with anger does not take any skill. To respond to anger with a
neutral attitude is higher up the food chain. However, to respond to anger with
calmness, kindness and a plan for resolution is along the path to enlightenment.
I will be the
first to admit that sometimes yelling back at someone feels really good. :-) The
problem though is that it seldom achieves a good outcome. Typically it just
spirals the situation out of control. Now I am not suggesting that you approach
difficult situations with a stupid looking cult-like zombie grin. Instead you
should be present in the situation and focus your energy on a resolution plan.
Positive thinking in bad
situations requires that you have
practiced what is known as future pacing ahead of time.
Future
pacing is when you imagine a possible situation and think
through all
of the alternatives. You actually see yourself trying on
different
behaviors. Earlier we discussed the concept of operating
on a
continuum. You can future pace many different possible
reactions to
any situation.
When you project positive energy you tend to attract positive
people. When you project negative energy people will line up to wallow in the
misery with you. The truth is that it is often very easy to strike up a
conversation with someone by whining about the current moment. The line is to
long or the temperature is to hot will get a quick response. I prefer to take
the positive approach and focus on something good about the situation. This can
be found in almost all situations.
If you plan ahead for problematic situations it becomes very easy
to turn a negative situation into a positive one. I always carry my ipod with me
loaded with six or seven hours of audios that I want to listen to. Anytime there
is a delay, I am prepared to be productive.
I am often accused of being too positive. My response is, "What
can it hurt?" Often I can elevate the morale around me, which if nothing else
makes my day go better. Just because you become a positive thinker does not
eliminate you from being a realist. If you come across a terrible car accident I
highly encourage to just take action. However, if you are about to spend 8 hours
with people that you do not particularly like, then there are lots of different
actions and responses along the continuum that you can deploy.
I encourage you to watch the move The Secret at secret.tv. You
can stream the video for $6 (does not work very well on a slow connection) or
buy the DVD for about $30. If you look past the slick marketing presentation it
provides a lot of good examples and insights into positive thinking.
How can you think positive if you are feeling depressed? First,
let me acknowledge that it is difficult to take any steps or make any decisions
when suffering from severe depression. Second, depression does not always make
logical sense. There have been many times when I have felt depressed even though
things in general were going well in my life.
People telling you to snap out of it or think positive will have
little effect. If you are planning ahead before you are depressed, there are a
number of things you can do. I have a recording of the theme song from "Rocky."
Listening to that always make me visualize Rocky bounding up the steps after
weeks of grueling training. So, pull together a collection of music that makes
you feel good.
If you want to help someone that is depressed then take action
with them. Get them moving, take them out in the sunshine or for a walk in the
park. Telling someone that is depressed to call you if they need help will
never work. You need to physically go there and do something with them.
Next make a list of things that you are grateful for. Focus on
what you have already. If you are living in the West you already have more that
95% of the world population can even dream about achieving.
It is easy to be dragged down into the negative energy around
you. Acknowledge when it happens, step outside, get centered and then go back
into the situation again.
